Looking Sideways – Sascha Hamm – Dealing with Catastrophe Part 1

The last few years Sascha has been charging big mountains and getting amazing results on the Freeride World Tour. He has actually been charging on a snowboard for 20 years! Last year however he suffered a terrible accident during a FWT competition in Austria where he fell 100 foot off a cliff and landed on his back. His list of injuries is extensive. It is a difficult topic to discuss.

Matt Barr has been a key part of the UK snowboard and wider action sports industry for just as long! After wondering why there was no good action sports podcasts he decided to make his own and use his connections (many of whom are long term friends) to have great conversations. The podcast is called Looking Sideways. Episode one featured Ski Sunday presender Ed Leigh, and episode two big wave surfer Andrew Cotton.

Back to Sascha. The title is Dealing with Catastrophe. The injury list from that crash makes for harrowing reading. This is quite frankly quite a hard conversation to listen to. The mental and physical consequences are huge. It is important to be aware of this side of things though. It is also amazing to hear how Sascha deals with risk and how he is dealing with his recovery.

We wish Sascha all the best in his recovery. Stay tuned for part 2!
